Which horses will be the top finishers in this year’s race? We have some advice below. But first this tip: a Triple Crown sweep isn’t possible this year, because different horses won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. That said, in the last 12 non-Triple-Crown editions of the Belmont Stakes, the favorite has won just twice. And 6 of the 12 winners were double-digit odds, so it might be prudent to expect big payouts.

Here are some predictions on the 2019 Belmont Stakes from our staff at USA TODAY NETWORK New Jersey, and other experts around the Jersey Shore and elsewhere: (more thoughts will be added during the week)
Is bred to get the 1 1/2 mile distance being a son of Tapit, and this is the race Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott has been thinking this horse was meant to win all along. He also does have the tactical speed to lay closer to the pace.
2. Intrepid Heart: Another son of Tapit. This one was a $750,000 yearling purchase. He lost all chance when he stumbled at the start of the Peter Pan at Belmont on May 11. Trainer Todd Pletcher usually enters horses who are primed for the Belmont.
3. War of Will: Had a perfect rail-skimming trip to win the Preakness after a similar trip imploded in the Kentucky Derby when he was interfered with by Maximum Security. He will likely get first run at expected pace-setter Joevia, but just trying to break up the obvious exacta.
